Just Moved
Sorry for the delay in new posts. I have just moved from Boston to Upstate, New York and my life is temporarily in boxes. Have much to write about and will do so soon.
Hi Susan I changed schools three years ago - it's a challenge, as I'm sure you realize, getting to know new students, new families, new colleagues...finding out where the paper clips are kept and exploring a new community. Please know you still have us - your virtual community as a familiar place to talk and share, as always!
I have a question for you. Everything about the Montessori method I've read says that writing usually precedes reading. Does it ever happen in a Montessori classroom that a child learns to read first? (I understand the early language curriculum pretty well, I think, but I am curious about the "usually" part and if that means that the rare child 'gets' sounding out what he sees before sounding out what he says.)
An AMI Montessori theorist employed by Catholic Community Services.
Catholic Community Services has consented to my use of photographs taken of the clients doing activities, to my writing about those activities and posting both on my blog. However, my blog is independent of CCS and my ideas stated here may not represent theirs.
I spent years in the Primary classroom and there are many posts here having to do with that work also.
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world and am free.
Please feel free to use all of the ideas for your family, friends, or school. However, unless you have my written consent, do not reproduce any posts or segments of posts for publication, commercial or educational. My writing is my property. Also, kindly refrain from selling any such ideas for profit. I encourage you to use my photos and to link to my posts providing the appropriate credit for the content. I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your blog. My son has been at a Montessori school for 2 years now. He is in extended day this year.
Your blog gives me great ideas for activities with our younger two, but also a great insight to the philosophy itself.
Good luck with your move.
